Fried Chicken in A Spaceship

This spaceship-like structure is a famous American fast food restaurant at the gate of Cihampelas Walk. Nice piece of architecture, isn't it?

Face-lift at Ciwalk

I have previously told a story about Cihampelas Walk or Ciwalk.

Throughout last year they did some face-lift and construction extension to the premises. Some new features were added. These include a boutique hotel and a skywalk. Quite a few architectural features of the extension buildings are very interesting. This bright-colored, futuristic looking ark-shaped building at the gate, for example, is very eye-catching. So are the tilted columns and brightly colored roof of the corridors at the entrance.

The ark-shaped building may have been inspired by the Noah's ark facade of Perahu Jeans shop located nearby it.

Peterpan Handprints

No, they are not the handprints of Peter Pan the fictitious mischievous boy character created by Scottish novelist and playwright J. M. Barrie (1860–1937). These handprints at Ciwalk (Cihampelas Walk) belong to the members of Peterpan, a top contemporary Indonesian pop rock band.

Young Street, Bandung

Several questions thus raised when I saw this:

- What would be the opposite of this street? And is there such a street?
- Why is youth (young people, the condition of being young) often associated with shopping, fun, and hip?
- Etc., etc.

This street, by the way, is located at Ciwalk (Cihampelas Walk), Bandung.

Ciwalk (Cihampelas Walk)

For busy urbanites who barely have time for other things besides their jobs, shopping has become more than just a way of getting their daily needs. It has become more of a recreational activity than just a mere function of buying things. In this way, modern shopping malls have become more than just a place for shops but an oasis of some sort where urban dwellers escape (even if it's only for a while) the harsh day to day realities.

Opinion aside, this is the photo of the front view of Cihampelas Walk or Ciwalk.

Located on Jalan Cihampelas (hence its name), one of Bandung's busiest commercial streets, Ciwalk is claimed to be one of only a few malls in Indonesia set amidst a lush green garden.

According to its website (in Indonesian), Ciwalk occupies a contoured area of 3.5 hectares, of which only one third of it is built. The rest are used for gardens, an open air theater or plaza (the foreground in the above photo), and a parking lot.
