"Nangka" Vendor

A 'nangka' (Artocarpus heterophyllus or A. heterophylla) vendor at the road side of Jalan Dr. Otten.

Nangka or jackfruit is said to be native to southern part of India, but is widely spread and cultivated in southeast Asia. It is the largest tree-born fruit known today. The fruit can weigh up to 36 kg (80 pounds) each and can be as long as 90 cm (36 inches) in length and 50 cm (20 inches) in diameter. You can see the whole fruits with their green peel on your left hand side of the picture. This vendor peels and slices the fruit and sell its bright yellow flesh by the kilogram.

Coconut Husk Fiber Mat and Friends

These keset (coconut-husk fiber mats) are for sale on the side of Jalan Dr. Otten street along with sapu ijuk (black palm-fiber brooms) and sapu lidi (brooms/rakes made of coconut leaf spines).

Because coconut trees are available in abundance here (Indonesia is the world's largest producer of coconut), a lot of household implements are made of coconut tree elements. Virtually every part of the coconut tree is usable.

Bandung's Green Shaded Street: Jalan Dr. Otten (Street)

Green shaded streets like the one in the above photo are a very common sight in the old parts of Bandung. This one is on Jalan Dr. Otten (Dr. Otten Street), a street that runs almost perpendicular to Jalan Pasteur where Dr. Hasan Sadikin Provincial Hospital is located. Trees have also been planted in the newer parts of the city, but they have not grown as big as these ones.
