Flying Bicycles

Flying bicycles at Alun-alun Cimahi (Cimahi City Square) park.

Cimahi is a municipality of about 600,000 population located about 12 kilometers to the west of the city of Bandung. It is one of the independent administrative areas that form the Greater Bandung Area(Bandung Raya) -- Other areas being Kota Bandung (Bandung Municipality), Kabupaten Bandung (Bandung Regency), and Kabupaten Bandung Barat (West Bandung Regency).

Train Ride at Alun-Alun Bandung

The photo: A train ride for children at Alun-Alun Bandung (Bandung City Square).

As I said in some of my previous posts, Alun-Alun Bandung is a crowded and lively place. A lot of activities take place here, this train ride being one of them.

Alun-alun Bandung is a park by designation, but it looks more more like a open air market where vendors offering all sorts of things can be found. Located right at the front yard of Bandung Grand Mosque, it may look and feel like an odd appendix to the mosque, especially to a foreigner. But to those who are familiar with our tradition, this may not be as strange as it looks.

The juxtaposing of the mundane (the market) and the holy (the mosque) in an alun-alun  (city square) is by tradition a symbolic spatial orientation, where the mosque is placed at the western edge of the square and the market at the southern edge. However, the current situation with Alun-Alun Bandung is very different. Instead of being placed a square apart, the market has moved into the square, therefore making it looks like part/an appendix of the mosque. Where the market was - at the southern edge of the square - is now an abandoned and ugly looking building that used to be a department store.

I'm still using my toy camera to take this picture. That's why it looks like the way it is.

Does Dog Like Coke?

Apparently it does.

Like humans, dogs like sweet drink like coke. Unfortunately, coke is bad for dogs. It can cause tooth and other serious health problems for them.

Alun-Alun Bandung - The City Square from The Top

This is the partial aerial view of Alun-Alun Bandung (Bandung's city square) today. I took this photo from the same tower where I took the photo I posted yesterday. The colorful little squares are roofed benches and the big square is the fountain. This is the view of the square in the southeastern direction.

Aerial View of Bandung: Southwest of The Grand Mosque

Here is an aerial view of Bandung looking to the southwest direction from the city center. I took this photo from one of the towers of West Java Provincial Grand Mosque or Mesjid Agung Propinsi Jawa Barat. In the foreground, behind the minaret, you can see Plaza Parahiyangan, one of the first shopping malls built in the city in the early 1980's.

Family Fishing Trip

It looks like people don't need to go to the rivers, lakes, or the sea anymore now to go fishing. This family seem to have a lot of fun fishing at Bandung City Square (the 'alun-alun'). Look what they are fishing though: magnetized plastic fish?

"Alun-alun" Bandung - Life at Bandung's City Square #1

City square (or in Indonesian "alun-alun") holds a very important function in the Javanese cosmological concept of a city. Alun-alun is not just an open public space or park in the center of the city. It is literally the front yard of a king/ruler's palace/residence. Surrounding it are the various symbols of a society/nation's livelihood. By rule, the palace should be located on the southern part of the square, facing north. On the west is placed a house of worship (the divine element: a mosque in Moslem Indonesia; a temple in Hindu era Indonesia). East of the square is the place for the market (the mundane/worldly element), and north is the place for the administrative offices of the kingdom/country/city.

Bandung's city square is as old as the city itself. The square was built as part of the new capital city of Bandung Regency in the early 19th century (before then, the capital was located at Dayeuh Kolot [old city], further south of where the current city square is located). The square's face has undergone a lot of changes since then, but one thing remains the same: It's still a bustling, open public space where citizens meet and do different kinds of activities.

In this series of photo coverage, I am trying to show you what life is like at Bandung's City Square today.
